It starts when he is at Burnham Industrial school, where he was sent for petty misdemeanors, running away repeatedly from the mind-deadening lack of intellectual stimulation. He began a life always on the move, in job after job but fear of being returned to Burnham made him move on every time a policeman appeared on the horizon.
