N2  - The "Shiner", aka Ned Slattery, 'the champion of anti-sweat', with a dash of humour was a well known character in his own time, a fixture in the landscape of South Canterbury and North Otago for he was more than fifty years on the road bucking the system and work.  He was immortalised by author, politician and former swagman, John A. LEE.  His anecdotes are very amusing, of course had a basis in reality, as did the proliferation of stories about Irish 'characters.'
