The Arab-Israeli War or as it is know in Israel the Yom Kippur War (War of Atonement) began when the Arab coalition launched a joint surprise-attack on Israel by crossing the ceasefire lines to enter the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights. This area had been captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Here is narratives of the conflict, first-hand accounts and interviews with combatants. The Arabs had learned from their defeat in the Six-Day War of 1967 and Israel learned lessons from its near-catastrophe in 1973. Herzog was a leader intimately involved with events of the war and the people so was able to write a comprehensive work about the events. The book was first published soon after the events.
