Summary: In April 1901 Harry Gilbert joined the 7th Canterbury Mounted Rifles and set off to fight the Boers in South Africa. Although he was away for not much more than a year, during that time Harry wrote more than 30 letters home. Most of these letters have survived to the present day and are presented here in the poignant account of a young man's introduction to the terrible consequences of war.
